About Health First Clinic

At Health First in Exeter, we combine ancient healing with modern techniques acquired from Masters in China to help you achieve balance and wellness

My journey into Tuina massage therapy has been shaped by both personal experience and family. I come from a family of health professionals, both from Western and Chinese Medicine, so caring for others and understanding the body’s natural healing abilities have always been important.

It wasn’t until I experienced my own health challenges that I truly discovered the power of Chinese medicine. The support and transformation I found through Tuina and other forms of Chinese Medicine left a deep impression on me — not just physically, but emotionally and energetically. These experiences inspired me to learn the practice for myself, so I could help others find the same relief, balance and sense of wellbeing.

My current practice provides Chinese Massage in Exeter for adults across all ages, with particular focus on Tuina which is more than just massage; it’s a powerful part of Chinese medicine that works with the body’s energy systems to encourage healing. I feel honoured to now be in a position to share this work with others and to support people in their own healing journeys with the same care and intention that helped me.

What Can You Expect

Our specailist Tuina Massage treatment here in Exeter is tailored to the physical requirements of your body, whilst maintaining the same core deliverables for the best possible outcome

In keeping with the traditional method, patients are requested to attend their appointment wearing loose-fitted, comfortable clothing where possible, as the best results are achieved where the practitioner is able to move all joints through their full range of motion.

In the first session, we begin with a written questionnaire about your general health to highlight any issues you may have. Then, we go to the physical assessment, where we will ask some questions to determine the root of the issue. Patients will be instructed to lie down or take a seat depending on the ailment presented. We will then assess the affected areas and tailor the treatment to your specific needs.

The first session will last 90 minutes and will consist of a 30-minute diagnosis and a 60-minute treatment. Any subsequent Tuina treatments will usually last between 30-60 minutes, depending on the condition.

It’s not uncommon for patients to feel a little sore during or after treatment, but the pressure of the manipulation will be adjusted for your comfort and you will always be in control of the intensity.

About TUINA

A Unique Approach to Healing

Tuina, or Tui-na (pronounced twee-nah) originated in China and dates back to around 300 BC. It’s the oldest known form of massage and is one of the four main branches of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the other three being acupuncture, Chinese herbs and Qi gong.

Tuina can be beneficial for a variety of conditions, including,  but not limited to:

- Musculoskeletal pain (e.g., back pain, neck pain, joint pain)

- Sports injuries

- Headaches and migraines

- Stress and anxiety

- Digestive disorders

- Insomnia

- Chronic fatigue

Unlike many types of massage, Tuina focuses on stimulating acupuncture points, meridians, and energy flow (Qi) in the body. It often involves more active movements, such as stretching and joint manipulation, rather than just kneading and stroking. Also, Tuina is performed over the clothes unlike many other types of massage.

During a Tuina session, you will typically remain clothed and lie on a massage table or sit in a chair. The practitioner will use their hands, fingers, elbows and forearms to apply pressure and perform various techniques. Sessions will last either 30 or 60 minutes, with the first session being roughly 90 minutes.
